Generally, individuals who are at least 21 years old and have held a valid class B driver's license for a minimum of 1 year can rent a car. Drivers between the ages of 19 and 21 can rent vehicles from suppliers offering a 'Young Driver' package. Rules vary based on the vehicle segment. For example, age and driving experience requirements increase for mid-size and premium vehicles. Car rental companies also perform a financial credit check (Findeks), and if approved, they will hand over the vehicle. Conditions vary from supplier to supplier, so it is important to carefully read the rental terms during the reservation process.

Driver's License Experience Requirements

If you want to rent a car for a short term (daily) in Türkiye, you are generally required to have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For premium and luxury vehicle groups, this requirement can increase to 2 - 5 years. Temporary or learner's permits are not accepted by most suppliers. Foreign licenses and international driving permits are accepted under specific rules.

Daily Mileage Limits for Rental Cars

Car rentals typically come with daily and monthly mileage limits. For most short-term rentals, you have a daily allowance of 300 - 500 km. Some companies, such as Sixt, may offer up to 3,000 km per day. For monthly rentals, the total mileage limit is usually between 3,000 and 5,000 km. If you exceed the mileage limit, you will be charged an excess mileage fee. Surcharge rates vary depending on the supplier and vehicle segment.

Car Rental Deposit Payment and Refund

Car rental companies hold a security deposit (pre-authorization) on your credit card at the time of vehicle pick-up. The amount varies depending on the supplier and the vehicle segment. After the rental ends, the deposit is released; if applicable, toll road and bridge fees, missing fuel, excess mileage, and damage costs are calculated and deducted, and the remaining balance is refunded. If there are no additional charges, the full deposit amount is sent to the issuing bank of the renter's credit card for a refund. Depending on interbank processing times and public holidays, the deposit release is typically reflected on the credit card within 1 to 10 business days.

Vehicle Pick-up and Return Conditions

Most suppliers expect you to return the vehicle with the exact same amount of fuel it had when picked up. If the fuel level is lower than stated in the contract upon return, the missing fuel cost will be charged to the user. Additionally, if new damage is detected on the vehicle, an extra fee or an insurance claim process will be applied based on the extent of the damage.

Extending the Car Rental Period

You can extend the rental period of your vehicle by contacting the rental supplier before your contract expires. If you do not request an extension, extra fees or penalties may apply for every hour and day of delay. For example, returning a daily rental 2-3 hours late might result in being charged for an additional full day. Procedures for late returns vary by company. When extending, the existing contract terms will continue to apply exactly as they are.

Reservation Cancellation and Modification Requests

You can modify or cancel your reservations before and after your planned pick-up time, subject to the terms and conditions. Thanks to this flexible cancellation process, you can easily request a refund for unexpected changes in your travel plans. However, please remember that to process a cancellation, you must not have picked up the rental car yet. Once your cancellation is successfully processed, the refund amount will be reflected in your account within 1-7 business days, depending on your bank's procedures.
